Solar battery price FAQs

Short answers to the questions people ask most about what a home battery costs. Each points to a fuller page where there is one.

Quick answer

A home battery fitted in an existing UK home cost a median of £1,300 per nominal kWh under 6 kWh, £890 from 6 to 11 kWh and £630 from 11 kWh in 2025/26 (DESNZ), at 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. There is no national battery grant.

What batteries cost

What is the average price of a home battery in the UK?

DESNZ publishes medians rather than a single average. For 2025/26 the middle installed price was £1,300 per nominal kWh under 6 kWh, £890 for 6 to 11 kWh and £630 for 11 kWh and over. On those figures a 5 kWh battery comes to about £6,500 fitted and a 13.5 kWh battery to about £9,400, at 0% VAT (to 31 March 2027).

Why do small batteries cost more per kWh?

Much of an installation costs the same whatever the battery's size: the visit, cabling, protection, commissioning, the certificate and the network paperwork. Spread over fewer kWh, those fixed costs raise the price per kWh, which is why the under-6 kWh band has the highest median.

Are the official prices per usable or per nominal kWh?

Nominal. MCS records the battery's nominal storage capacity and DESNZ prices against it. If a battery lets you use less than its label, its price per usable kWh is higher than any official figure.

What size battery should I be pricing?

Start from the evening and night use you want to cover, not from the biggest size on offer. Ofgem's typical medium-use home uses 2,500 kWh a year on a single-rate meter, about 6.8 kWh a day. Price the usable size that covers the part of that you want shifted, and remember solar fills a battery far less in winter.

Have battery prices gone down?

Not for every size. Between 2024/25 and 2025/26 the median rose about 20% for batteries under 6 kWh, fell about 2% for 6 to 11 kWh and rose about 7% for 11 kWh and over, while the number recorded rose 82%.

Tax and paying

Is there VAT on a home battery?

Installed in a home, a battery is zero-rated until 31 March 2027 and charged at 5% from 1 April 2027. A 10 kWh battery at about £8,800 would be about £9,200 from that date. Bought without installation, a battery is standard-rated.

Is there a grant for a home battery?

There is no national grant for a home battery anywhere in the UK. Warm Homes: Local Grant in England can include a battery for some lower-income homes, but only alongside solar panels. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme does not fund electric batteries.

Can I borrow to pay for a battery?

The government's Warm Homes Loan Scheme lists an electrical storage battery among the measures it can finance, up to £15,000, through participating lenders and with their checks. It is a loan you repay. This site is not a lender, names no lenders and arranges nothing.

Can I be paid for electricity my battery exports?

Possibly. GOV.UK says storage that can import and export could be used under the Smart Export Guarantee. Each supplier sets its own export tariff, which must be above zero, and you need a meter that records half-hourly exports.

The quote

How do I check whether my quote is reasonable?

Divide the total by the battery's nominal kWh and compare it with the official median for its size band. Above the median, ask for the quote to be itemised; below it, ask what is left out. The quote checker on the price per kWh page does the sum.

What adds to the price of an installation?

Mainly where the battery has to go (fire-resisting separation, ventilation, alarms and impact protection under PAS 63100), the inverter work, any backup for power cuts, the network application and the certificates. None has an official price, so ask for each as a line.

Does AC or DC coupling change the price?

It can. With existing panels an AC-coupled battery usually keeps your solar inverter and adds its own, while a DC-coupled system usually replaces it with a hybrid inverter. Which?, citing the Energy Saving Trust, says AC systems tend to cost more, without giving figures.

Does backup in a power cut cost extra?

Usually. A battery that keeps circuits running while the grid is down needs switching so it can supply the home safely in isolation. Ask for the backup hardware priced separately and for the list of circuits it covers.

Is it cheaper to fit a battery at the same time as panels?

It can be: one visit and one round of paperwork cover both, and Which? reports that several large suppliers discount a battery bought with panels. There is no official figure for the difference, because DESNZ prices batteries and panels in separate series.

Rules and safety

Where can a home battery go?

PAS 63100 prefers outdoors or a separate outbuilding where practicable. It rules out bedrooms, escape routes such as landings and staircases, cupboards opening into bedrooms, lofts and roof spaces, voids, cellars with no way outside, and outdoor spots within 1 m of doors, windows, escape routes or vents.

Can a battery go in the loft?

No. PAS 63100 lists voids, roof spaces and lofts among the places a home battery should not be installed.

Do I need to tell the electricity network?

Yes, in every case, and the installer normally does it. MCS says systems up to 3.68 kW can be notified within 28 days of installation under G98, while storage over 3.68 kW needs a G99 application before installation.

Do the Wiring Regulations cover home batteries?

Yes. Amendment 4 to BS 7671, published on 15 April 2026, added a chapter on stationary batteries covering design, inverters, protection, location, ventilation and fire risk. The previous edition was withdrawn six months later.

How long are battery warranties?

Which? says battery systems often come with a 10-year warranty. Most warranties also limit the total energy or cycles covered, so dividing the price by the warranted energy is a fair way to compare quotes.

Is a heat battery the same as a home battery?

No. A heat battery stores heat for heating or hot water; a home battery stores electricity. They are different products under different rules, and nothing on this site prices heat batteries.
